We recently heard from the FoodMachine team at Las Palmas school in the Dominican Republic that they have reached an important milestone. They are beginning to market the lettuce! We are so proud of them and all the hard work they have put in. Below is the re-post of Rachel’s personal blog post. Enjoy!
We have come to the point in our FoodMachine where marketing is our focus. We have worked out all the kinks (at least we hope we have) and are producing lettuce on a regular basis.
The school uses the lettuce for salads and hamburgers in the lunches, but that’s not enough. Two weeks ago we sent home a note with the kids at the school announcing that we are selling fresh, organic lettuce. A few days later, I come to school to find out that one of the parents took the flyer we sent home and made us a banner. How cool is that?! (It even has my name on it “Ask Miss Rachel.”) We hung the sign up at the school and now not just the parents of the students, but everyone that walks by our school knows that we are selling lettuce and many have bought from us.
We have also set up a system for our loyal customers who buy on a regular basis. They can set up a plan to receive lettuce weekly, every other week, or monthly. We harvest the lettuce on Tuesday and bring it to them. We have other ideas that we are working on to help us get our system working at full capacity. I’m excited about the possibilities and can’t wait to see how it all works out.
